Synopsis

Switzerland’s mobile market has undergone a number of changes in recent years. The operator Salt (formerly Orange Switzerland) was acquired by NJJ Capital and in mid-2018 began offering fibre-based fixed broadband and pay TV services, while the MNO Sunrise (bought by the private equity firm CVC Capital Partners) is in the process of closing down its 2G network and repurposing spectrum and physical assets for LTE use.

The market has also benefited from the entry of the main cableco UPC Switzerland as an MVNO. As a full-service provider UPC, which is planning to switch to Swisscom’s network during 2019, can compete effectively with the other key operators.

Mobile penetration is on a par with the European average while mobile data use among consumers has increased rapidly in line with the extended reach of LTE. Customer use of mobile data services is helping to offset declining ARPU and lower traffic in the SMS segment as consumers adopt a range of OTT messaging services. Higher data usage has also encouraged the MNOs to invest in 5G services. Swisscom is among the leading telcos in Europe for trialling 5G, with plans to offer commercial services in 2020.

This report assesses Switzerland’s mobile market, presenting an analysis of the regulatory environment, service offerings and emerging new technologies, and profiles of the main providers.
