BuddeComm Intelligence Report - 5G Global Trends and Leading Countries 2019

Synopsis

The emerging 5G technology has attracted intense interest from the ICT industry and wider community due to its potential to increase opportunities for developments related to IoT including M2M communications, virtual reality, Artificial Intelligence and mission critical communication. It is also expected to enhance overall capacity, speed and latency of the mobile networks.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has development underway towards a global standard. While it is expected that the full standardization process won’t be completed until around early 2020 – in 2019 we are beginning to see a clearer picture of what 5G entails and many countries are considering spectrum requirements and conducting preliminary trials and testing.

In addition, interest in 5G devices is beginning to escalate as manufacturers jockey for position and there are numerous devices in development.

In recent years there has become an obvious “race to market” competition around the world with operators, manufacturers and governments all wanting to be the first to capture the opportunities presented by the 5G evolution.

BuddeComm’s Senior Analysts have identified 13 countries it sees as demonstrating leading progress towards 5G development in 2019, with representation from Europe, North America, Asia-Pacific and the Middle East. In the developing markets of Latin America, the South Pacific and Africa; there are also signs emerging of activity in the 5G area.

This report explores and analyses the current progress of the 5G evolution including timelines for standards development, spectrum candidates, key considerations for government and the potential uses and applications associated with 5G. In addition, the report provides initial industry forecasts for subscriptions, CAPEX and devices. Buddecomm analysts have identified the top 13 countries demonstrating progress towards 5G.

Paul, May I congratulate you on a very successful and enjoyable afternoon with the Minister. In providing the roundtable discussions between government and industry, it highlighted the strong interest by stakeholders in Broadband and its implementation but it also presented us with other issues and opportunities that we need to address.

Dominic Schipano, CITT
