• Benelux - Major Telecom Players

  All three Benelux countries have performed well in terms of penetration and availability of services. In common with most other EU countries, fixed-line operations are in decline while mobile services are flourishing, especially in Luxembourg. Strong investment in upgraded mobile and fixed-line networks, particularly in The Netherlands, has encouraged consumer take-up of IP-delivered content and the rapid migration of mobile subscribers to 3G. Belgium and The Netherlands have strong competition in all sectors, but Luxembourg’s telecoms sector is still dominated by the incumbent and the country has been tardy in meeting EU directives. This report describes the present activities of the major operators in Belgium, Luxembourg and The Netherlands, both fixed-line and mobile.

• Europe - Travelogue - High level trans-sector discussions in The Netherlands October 2009

  Synopsis

  In October 2009 Paul Budde travelled to the Netherlands and the USA to discuss trans-sector policies and approaches. Discussions took in developments being undertaken in Australia and New Zealand. Trans-sector strategies are fundamental to the innumerable socio-economic benefits which can be brought about from deploying a national fibre infrastructure. These go beyond telecoms, and will incorporate many aspects of citizens’ lives. Effective strategies are needed to implement a trans-sector approach, bringing in investment from many effected players and industries. This report assesses some of the challenges faced, and recommends appropriate and realistic solutions.

• Netherlands - Analysis latest telecoms developments - mid-2009

  In June 2009 Paul Budde travelled to Europe (Germany, France, Belgium and the Netherlands). This trip was of particular interest due to a number of developments that have taken place in the past six months. This has changed the telecoms landscape quite dramatically. Following the financial crisis there is now an emphasis on government leadership, and in some countries this has led to trans-sector thinking in relation to infrastructure investments such as FttH. These benefits are way beyond telecoms. This change in policy and strategy could see some countries becoming leaders, while past leaders may fall behind. The Netherlands has been a leader in broadband and it will have to look at these new developments and assess its own situation in the rapidly changing environment. Paul also had a meeting on this topic with Minister Frank Heemskerk and with the Department of Economic Affairs.

• Netherlands - Broadband Market - Overview, Statistics & Forecasts

  Synopsis

  Dutch broadband penetration is one of the highest in the world, the result of large-scale government and municipal investment in broadband infrastructure. The country has comprehensive DSL and cable networks, and has expanded both ADSL2+ Ethernet capabilities to provide data rates to manage burgeoning customer demand for triple play services. In addition, the number of significant fibre deployments represents one of the most extensive and cost-effective fibre infrastructures in Europe. The largely consolidated cable sector, led by Ziggo and UPC Nederland, is countering fibre deployments by introducing EuroDOCSIS 3.0 technology. In this report we profile the Dutch fixed and wireless broadband markets in 2010, providing statistics and analysis on technologies including ADSL2+, FttH, powerline broadband, wireless broadband, WiFi and Internet via satellite. We also provide broadband forecasts through to 2019.

• Netherlands - Digital Media Developments

  The Australia-New Zealand Broadband Study and Trade Mission to The Netherlands took place in March 2007. At the conclusion of the Mission the participating countries resolved to further explore the various applications related to the new media. Both Australia and The Netherlands have advanced programs in place that can benefit organisations on both sides of the world. The governments involved have also indicated that their policy focus has shifted from broadband access to broadband applications.   Synopsis

  Dutch broadband penetration is among the highest in the world, the result of government and municipal investment in broadband infrastructure together with a range of local initiatives. The country’s comprehensive DSL and cable networks have thus been supplemented with wide-scale fibre deployment: financial commitments from KPN/Reggefiber, BBned and municipalities have pushed the Netherlands to the forefront of fibre infrastructure in Europe. KPN’s decision to deliver FttH nationally within the next few years will further consolidate this lead, helping to place the country as the regional benchmark against which other European operators and regulators will be assessed. This report analyses fibre deployments in the Netherlands in 2010, including regulatory developments and operator strategies for coming years.

• Netherlands - Mobile Market - Overview, Statistics & Forecasts

  The Netherlands has continued to show growth in the mobile sector despite the country’s high penetration rate. In common with other advanced European markets, the 3G sector is the main driver for subscriber growth, though there remains little consumer enthusiasm for the take-up of high-end data services. KPN launched Europe’s first national mobile TV network in June 2008, capitalising on its recent network upgrades. Following the acquisition of Orange by T-Mobile in late 2007 there are only three network operators in the market. All provide wholesale services to MVNOs and resellers, and having reached 90% population coverage on their 3G networks they have focussed on HSPA infrastructure as a basis for developing mobile data services. This report provides statistics and analyses on the Dutch mobile market in 2010, including a review of the key operators and regulatory issues. It also assesses emerging mobile data services such as mobile TV, and provides ARPU and 3G forecasts to 2015.
