Macedonia possesses a small but developing telecoms market. Competition in the fixed sector has been launched by an alternative operator boasting a nationwide wireless broadband access network, one of the largest in the world. A number of WiMAX licences were awarded during 2007 to offer nationwide and regional services. Internet and broadband penetration is growing, in part due to initiatives to improve the country’s IT literacy and public Internet access. The launch of IPTV services looks more likely given the approval of the incumbent’s board to launch services. Not to be outdone, the cable TV operators are upgrading infrastructure to eventually launch triple play services. A third mobile network operator has launched services and the government is determining if enough interest exists to launch a 3G licence tender. This report provides an overview of the communications market of the Former Yugoslav Republic Of Macedonia in 2008, accompanied by relevant statistics and brief profiles of the major operators.
