The largest global telecommunications research site on the web.
Compared with the rest of South America, Argentina’s telecom infrastructure is one of the most advanced. Fixed-line teledensity is over 22% and growing, while in neighbouring Brazil and Chile, teledensity is under 21% and declining. Despite liberalisation, real competition has yet to develop in the local telephony sector, but the long distance market is highly competitive. The country has two regional incumbents, Telecom Argentina and Telefónica de Argentina, controlled by Telecom Italia. Telefónica’s acquisition of a stake in Telecom Italia has led to antitrust concerns and commercial conflicts. This report provides an overview of Argentina’s telecom infrastructure and regulatory environment, together with brief profiles of the main fixed network operators and statistical data.
