The mobile data sector offers enormous potential, reflected by the number of diverse players all vying for this market. Competition is increasing and there is some evidence that usage of mobile data content and services is starting to grow – albeit slowly. The number of wireless Internet subscribers in Asia was estimated at around 250 million by end-2007, representing a more than six-fold increase from the 39 million subscribers at end-2001. Developed countries in the region, such as Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan, are well placed to exploit the growing wireless Internet market and lead the rest of the region into the brave new world of mobile data applications and content.
