The latest addition in the long list of mobile data technologies is HSDPA for the 3G networks. While the capabilities are impressive, by late 2007 cracks started to appear in Telstra’s high user charges of the services on offer, which are inhibiting their business potential. Where there is competition prices have come down significantly. The question is will HSDPA ever reach its true mass market potential, or will WiMAX and 4G take that position in 2010-2012. A rapid deployment of low cost data access packages will propel HSDPA right in front the debate. In early 2008 HSPA+ and LTE have started to arrive on the horizon.
