Synopsis

Archived report: this report was archived in June 2004 and has not been updated since. Vivendi Universal is a global media and communications company, with operations in telecommunications, TV and film, music, and the Internet. It was formed by the merger of Vivendi, Seagram and Canal Plus in December 2000, when Vivendi acquired Canada’s Seagram (owner of Universal Music Group and Universal Studios) and 51% of European pay-TV provider Canal Plus. In July 2002, Vivendi top management was replaced in view of its high losses and rumoured accounting irregularities. Since then the company has been systematically selling off assets, although it acquired a further 26% of Cegetel for €4 billion. In October 2003, it agreed to merge Vivendi Universal Entertainment with NBC. A company analysis was updated in June 2004.
