Synopsis
Unwired currently provides a type of proprietary pre-WiMAX wireless broadband Internet services to the residential, SOHO and SME markets, which have the ability to handle voice and data communications. The company uses technology developed by US-based Navini Networks (now part of Cisco). Unwired has acquired sufficient spectrum in the 2.3GHz and 3.4-3.5GHz ranges, to enable it to deliver broadband Internet access, VoIP telephony and multimedia communications to approximately 64% of the Australian population.
In 2008, the company was 100% acquired by Seven Network. In that same year the company’s network was covering most of Sydney and 35% of Melbourne. Having initially targeted an early 2008 rollout for mobile WiMAX based on the its 802.16e stand, Unwired’s sister company VividWireless announced that it will trial a 4G network in Perth in 2010. A significant win in 2009 was the agreement with electricity utility SP Ausnet to roll out a WiMAX network for smart meters.
