Synopsis

In 2016 fixed broadband services are available in Turkey through xDSL, cable and fibre networks. Fixed broadband services based on fibre are quickly growing in Turkey with subscriber number growing three-fold since 2013. There are now over 1.8 million fibre broadband subscribers across Turkey. Both Turk Telekom and Turkcell’s Superonline have focused considerable attention on deploying fibre networks.

Turk Telekom is the dominant ISP and has maintained this position against an influx of competitors. Turkey’s sizeable Internet user population has fostered an emerging digital economy, encompassing e-commerce, e-government, e-health and e-education services. Digital media services such as online newspapers, video streaming, social media and e-commerce are also popular amongst online users.

In mid-2016 Turkcell announced it would create a joint venture company with Vodafone Turkey and Turksat, as well as members of the Telecommunications Operators Association (TELKODER). The joint venture would mean companies would no longer deploy duplicate infrastructure and would also maximise use of existing infrastructure.
