Synopsis
Telstra entered the UK market after deregulation in 1995. It obtained one of the 160 national carrier licences, permitting it to offer both full domestic services as well as international services via resale. In November 1998, it was awarded an international telecommunications licence, enabling it to lease its own links to Australia and Asia. During 1998, Telstra began a major push into continental Europe, but began to scale these back considerably in 2000. Its European headcount was reduced by one-third and its retail activities were redirected to smaller corporates and wholesale business.
