Synopsis

Archived report: this report was archived in June 2004 and has not been updated since. Telecom Italia was formed by the merger of private and state owned companies in 1994. In 1997, the company was privatised. It operates fixed telecommunications services and is the holding company for various businesses, principally telecommunications. It is Italy’s largest fixed-line operator, and also wireless provider through its 60% owned Telecom Italia Mobile (TIM). It holds stakes in mobile phone operations outside Italy, and its ISP, Seat-Tin.it, is a major player in Italy’s Internet market. It spun off and sold its directory services company, Seat Pagine Gialle. It is listed on the Borsa Italiana and on the New York Stock Exchange. In August 2003, the company merged with Olivetti.
