Taiwan - Broadband Market - Overview, Statistics and Forecasts

Synopsis

Taiwan has become a significant player in broadband internet access. Through active support from the government, the total broadband penetration had been lifted to around 95% considering both fixed line and mobile. The proportion of the population who are internet users has exceeded 70%. Some 90% of all homes in Taiwan own PCs and more than 65% of homes have fixed-line broadband connections. The market has also moved strongly to broadband and in particular FttX. There are a large number of ISPs (more than 180) in Taiwan, although a handful of big ones continue to dominate the market. This report presents an overview of the broadband market in Taiwan, including an overview of the operators, services provided and the fledgling WiMAX deployments. Fixed-line broadband forecasts and FttX forecasts for 2011 and 2016 are included, as well detailed statistics on broadband subscribers by technology.

A continuous decline in xDSL subscriptions since reaching a peak of 3.8 million in 2006; a strong shift to FttX subscriptions which are set to surpass DSL by 2012; increased investments of NT$200 billion by Chunghwa Telecom in its broadband network over the next ten years to 2020 to offer home users speeds of 10Gb/s, with business customers benefiting from speeds of up to 100Gb/s; a decline in broadband tariffs stimulate further demand; poor adoption of WiMAX drives consolidation with Vee Telecom (Time) acquiring VMax; successful e-government program allowing the government to exclusively to using electronic documents.
