Synopsis

Archived report: this report was archived on 6 April 2005 and has not been updated. The report presents a historical snapshot of Spain’s broadband and e-services sectors in 2004. Material relating to the country’s broadband market is updated in the Spain - Broadband Market - Overview, Statistics & Forecasts report. While the potential Internet market is huge – Spain has a population of over 41 million people – broadband penetration is slightly lower than the EU average. Overall, broadband access prices in Spain are relatively expensive in terms of the price to performance ratio. The highest growth is taking place in xDSL, which shot up by 111% in terms of subscribers during 2003. Telefonica’s effective control of copper networks has allowed it to dictate the deployment of ADSL services and become the largest ADSL – and broadband – provider in Spain. During 2003, total B2C sales in Spain grew 32% to €1,530 million. Progress in e-government led to the first example of Spanish e-voting in March 2003.
