The Philippines mobile market really took off back in 1999/2000. Since the end of 2000 the number of mobile telephone subscribers has grown by a factor of eleven, racing past the number of fixed-line telephone subscribers in that year, to be approaching 72 million by March 2009. This report looks at the market in which this remarkable growth has taken place. It also describes another related phenomenon – the amazing performance of SMS in the Philippines. Around 1.39 billion SMS messages were being sent every day in the Philippines. This is the largest SMS volume in the world, the Philippines accounting for more than 10% of global SMS. Mobile operators in the Philippines were reported to be generating the highest proportion of non-voice revenues in the world.
