Synopsis
While the telecom sector in the Philippines has witnessed considerable investment and activity since deregulation in 1993, the market has fallen short of its potential. However, there are strong signs that this is changing. While the mobile market has been energetic for some years now, the fixed-line market has started to move again and, most significantly, the broadband Internet sector is finally building a healthy subscriber base. The global financial problems were, however, introducing some uncertainty into the local market coming into 2009. This report provides a statistical overview of the Philippines telecoms market. The difficulty in obtaining accurate statistical information on the market is noted; for some indicators official figures are only available to 2006.
