Niue - Telecoms Market Overview & Statistics

Synopsis

The island of Niue is one of the world’s smallest self-governing states. Telecom Niue provides telephone services to almost every household in Niue and is the island’s largest generator of revenue. The only ISP, Internet User’s Society Niue (IUSN), provides free non-commercial email and Internet online connections to permanent residents of Niue and approved government departmental users. In 2003 IUSN launched free broadband Internet services for locals and the world’s first free nationwide WiFi Internet access service. Niue is considering upgrading its old analogue network to a GSM system and is planned for 2008 or 2009, along with plans for fibre access. Niue also plans to be the first island country where every island child will have a laptop. Please note that this report is updated very infrequently due to limited availability of information on the local telecoms market. Only very minor updates have been made to this report since 2005 up-to-date statistics are not currently available.
