Synopsis
By early 2012 mobile network operator 2degrees has grown on average at around one thousand customers a day over and has snared around 17% overall market share since launching in the previous duopoly-based mobile market in 2009. With the new player creating some price-based competition in the saturated New Zealand mobile market, the resulting churn between operators saw their market share sliding.
By late 2011 the MVNO market was also shifting between the operators, seeing one operator moving from Vodafone to Telecom. Telecom launched a new brand Skinny in 2012, clearly aimed at the youth market and targeting the other two MNOs while trying to obtain subscribers at a price point. The mobile market still at around 120% penetration is continuing to grow as some operators provide add-on packs attracting increased usage at a lower cost.
The possibility of a fourth network operator has been made by a UK-based company and may see the spectrum auction in 2013/14 providing an even higher return for the government.
But from 2012 onwards, other communication methods will increase as faster broadband speeds are available through the extended use of fibre. These alternative methods will include increased usage of MoIP and VoIP by consumers and businesses looking to value add to their communication spend.
