French speaking New Caledonia is equipped with a modern telephone system provided by government-owned OPT New Caledonia, the sole provider of domestic telecommunications services including a GSM mobile network. Traditional Internet access is widely available. Broadband ADSL is procurable in an increasing number of areas. Mobile telephony has become the favoured means of communication, with users exceeding the number of fixed-line connections by more than 2:1.
