Synopsis
Morocco’s Internet market was dominated by Maroc Telecom’s ADSL broadband service which once held over 90% of the market. Despite this de-facto monopoly situation, the country developed some of the lowest broadband prices and highest penetration rates in Africa and has seen the introduction of innovative new services such as the first commercial IPTV service on the continent. Within four years of their introduction, third-generation (3G) mobile broadband services had taken more than three quarters of the broadband market by early 2011. This development is expected to continue, since the mobile networks reach a far greater percentage of the population than MT’s copper fixed-line network. To accommodate the increasing amount of Internet traffic, fibre optic national backbone networks and international connectivity are being expanded.
