Synopsis
The mobile market in Mexico witnessed a slowdown in subscriber growth and usage in 2009, due in large part to the period of economic recession precipitated by the global financial crisis. Nevertheless, the strength of the mobile sector was illustrated by its double digit growth for the year against a backdrop of GDP contraction. Subscriber growth is expected to remain in single figures during 2010-2011 due to a slow economic recovery and due to penetration rates exceeding 80%. Whilst Telcel still dominates market share, a decision by the competition regulator in early 2010 paves the way for more stringent regulation in favour of Telcel’s competitors. In addition, the proposed 3G spectrum auctions in May 2010 are expected to see new entry and a more competitive environment from 2011 onwards. In addition, Televisa’s acquisition of a stake in Nextel adds the prospect of a sizeable competitor to Telcel if they win spectrum. This report provides an overview of Mexico’s mobile market, accompanied by relevant statistical data and subscriber forecasts, as well as brief profiles of the major operators including monthly ARPU figures.
