Mexico - Convergence and Digital TV Broadcasting - Overview and Statistics

Synopsis

Archived report – this report was archived 27 June 2011 and has not been updated. In Mexico the main cable TV providers, Megacable, Cablemás and Cablevisión, had been incentivising the purchase of triple play bundles of cable TV, broadband and telephony, with great success. In early 2010 quadruple play appeared imminent as broadcasting giant Televisa received regulatory approval to acquire a stake in the mobile operator Nextel de Mexico. The acquisition was set to bring a much-needed source of competition against the dominant fixed line, broadband and mobile operators Telmex and Telcel. In the satellite TV market, Dish Mexico had early success with rapid subscriber growth. Axtel had also received regulatory approval to launch satellite TV and plans to begin offering triple-play services in 2010. This report provided an overview of Mexico’s digital TV broadcasting sector and its convergence with the broader telecommunications market.
