Synopsis
The remarkable growth in Malaysia’s mobile market over a number of years could not hide the fact that the industry was in need of restructuring. Behind the strong growth, there was considerable activity going on with changes to the companies and further reshaping of the local telecom sector. The number of operators in Malaysia reduced from five to three and then, with 3G licences having been awarded in a two stage process, next generation services have since been rolled out and had started having a major impact on the market. A new operator, U Mobile, had also entered the market specifically offering 3G services. Coming into 2011, growth in total subscribers was moderating somewhat, as the market appeared to almost pause. But mobile data was providing a fresh spark. This report looks at the developments in the Malaysian mobile market and reviews the changes taking place. It also provides some general information on Malaysia’s broadcasting market.
Companies covered in this report include: Celcom; Maxis Communications; U Mobile; DiGi.
