Synopsis
Kiribati’s telecommunications sector was liberalised with the formation of Telecom Kiribati Ltd and Telecom Services Kiribati Ltd (TSKL). Currently TSKL operates a mobile telephone network as well as traditional fixed line voice services. Telecom Kiribati is fully-owned by the government while TSKL is a privatised company. The telecommunications infrastructure is limited by the large distances involved; consequently not all the island groups have telecommunications services. New ISPs could possibly emerge in 2009. Fiji-based Digicel has applied to the Kiribati government to obtain a license to begin operating a mobile service in Kiribati. Please also note that this report is updated infrequently due to limited availability of information on the local telecoms market.
