Synopsis
Archived report: this report was archived on 31 January 2005 and has not been updated. In common with most European countries, Italy’s voice, data and Internet markets are distinguished by the ongoing deregulation and disestablishment of the incumbent operator. Voice services were deregulated in 1998 but as elsewhere, the national incumbent has maintained a strong hold on all telephony markets. Broadband growth took off in 2003, and unlike other large European states, alternative broadband technologies such as Fibre-to-the-Home (FttH) and metro Ethernet have a major presence. Telecom Italia also has a strong presence in the Internet arena, though Tiscali and Wind are also significant ISPs. This report provides a historical snapshot of Italy’s voice, data and Internet markets in 2004.
