Ireland - Broadband and E-Services

Synopsis

Archived report: this report was archived on 15 February 2005 and has not been updated. Material relating to broadband in Ireland is updated in the Ireland - Broadband Market - Overview, Statistics & Forecasts report. This archived report profiles the Irish fixed and wireless broadband markets and developments in the e-commerce market in 2004. Ireland has historically had an under-developed broadband market, with very poor levels of xDSL and cable modem adoption compared with comparable European countries. Low penetration has been due to high wholesale costs, lack of competition, high retail prices, limited coverage in many non-urban areas, and general low market awareness. The market slowly began to move in late 2003 and 2004 as the incumbent, eircom, and the regulator combined to diversify the market.
