Globe Telecom is controlled by Ayala Corp, the largest corporate conglomerate in the Philippines, with SingTel as a strategic partner. The company operates one of the two dominant GSM networks in the Philippines, as well as the second largest fixed-line network. It also provides international leased line services, broadband and dial-up Internet access and carrier services over its nationwide backbone network. Globe pioneered prepaid and SMS services. These became the growth drivers for cellular operators in the country. In 2001, Globe completed a strategically important acquisition of competitor, Islacom, boosting its network capacity, customer base and economies of scale.
