Synopsis

Archived report. This report was archived in 2006 and has not been updated. To compete with fixed wire broadband, it is essential for reliable high-speed wireless technologies to be developed. The major areas where high-speed services are needed are mobile data communications, fixed wireless broadband used to bypass the incumbent fixed networks, spread spectrum technologies, broadband satellite and digital TV/datacasting. The new technologies include the intermediate mobile standards like GPRS, the emerging 3G standards, and the fixed wireless technologies WiFi, WiMAX and a range of proprietary services operating in 3.4GHz band. This report discusses the issues facing wireless broadband, and describes the fixed wireless technologies.
