Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) has been developed to the extent that it is being adopted on a large scale in several countries, especially Japan, providing significant cost savings over the traditional POTS. There are still some technical problems involved in interfacing with POTS, but these are progressively being solved. This report discusses the technologies and standards involved in VoIP, together with government regulations coverings its development.
