Fuelled by new telecommunications facilities, the creation of the virtual company is the latest industry trend, allowing companies to extend their communications network to employees, suppliers and customers. Tasks can be conducted anywhere within the network, with IP-based technologies as the key driver, particularly in combination with other developments, such as CRM, data centres and MASP and ASP developments. All these ingredients are an essential component of any virtual company, and need to be managed properly. Out-tasking or task-sourcing, together with offshoring, are strategic tools that should also be considered.
