Synopsis
Archived report. This report was archived in 2005 and has not been updated. Since 2001, the satellite industry showed little or no growth, and growth is not expected to return in the near future. Despite the original optimism and huge cash injections, MSS has not yet succeeded in establishing itself as a competitive market segment. Iridium went into bankruptcy pending restructure within a year of launching its service and Globalstar, another major international player, suffered the same fate. During the past few years, many of the surviving operations were acquired by Teledesic which, in turn, has been mothballed. This report provides statistics and an analysis of the (once) major players in the MSS business. Most of the news for the past few years has been of deceased estate clearance sales and post mortems. In 2005, some signs of returning life emerged.
