Synopsis

The Internet is a global network of networks. In most cases the boundaries between the private, corporate, public and academic computer networks that make up the Internet are transparent to users. Even though the computers that are linked together use many different hardware and software platforms, the Internet is possible because of the use of common communication protocols. The development of the most important of these protocols is described here, together with a brief history of the development of the Internet since its genesis as a tool for the US military.
