Synopsis
E-mail has become the single most important application on the Internet, and is by far the most common use for the Internet. After a slow start, it took off in about 1996 when it moved away from proprietary to open systems. This did not start until about 1996, but it has experienced remarkable growth since that time. This report summarises the history of e-mail, its development, on-line advertising, and statistics and forecasts as of 2000.
