Synopsis

Archived report. This report was archived in 2009 and has not been updated. The satellite industry has been going through a period of change over the past couple of years with large operators consolidating, new operators starting up, and old operators attempting to move into new markets. A new generation of ground equipment, revamped service plans, and the launch of some exceptional in-orbit satellite assets also means that the industry has obtained a set of tools that better positions it to take advantage of a variety of business opportunities. In 2008 the satellite broadband market is beginning to show signs of some success and data applications were the main source of growth for mobile satellite services in 2007. This report provides an overview and introductory information on satellite networks and services, including statistics where available.
