Synopsis

Archived report. This report was archived in 2006 and has not been updated. The lack of infrastructure competition is hampering the developments of most knowledge-based societies. Voice services are under pressure from VoIP, and the new nextgen (NGN) platforms are going to have a major impact. Mobile communications will consolidate in mature markets but continue their spectacular growth in developing countries, mainly Africa. Mobile data, beyond SMS and other than countries such as Japan and Korea, will remain a niche market business and will grow into IP-based WiMAX services towards the end of the decade. Apart from NGN, the main enabler is broadband. The aim is now to bundle these products into attractive triple play or quadruple play business models. Further analysis of the NGN market is available from a separate report.
