Archived report. This report was archived in 2009 and has not been updated since. The concept of cable TV superhighways (offering more than just TV) started to emerge in the early 1990s. Initially the cable TV operators were looking at Video-on-Demand services. This proved to be too difficult and other TV based services such as iTV didn’t have the right business model. At the same time, telephone companies indicated that they would move into video media. Cable operators towards the end of the 90s started to explore the more lucrative broadband services. This has been a great success story. The move is now towards the concept of ‘Triple Play’, providing voice, data and video services. This report provides an overview of the cable market sector including a regional overview and global cable market statistics for the cable telephony, modem and TV markets.
