Synopsis
Digital Subscriber Line has various forms, but the most commonly used at present is the asymmetrical version (ADSL), allowing transmission speeds of up to 8Mb/s downstream and 640Kb/s upstream. The advantage of DSL over other broadband systems is that it uses existing twisted copper wires as the transmission medium. The nature, strengths and weaknesses of each of the DSL variants is described in this report, together with a discussion of the associated standards.
