Archived report: This report was archived in July 2006 and is no longer updated. During the mid-1990s, the Internet became the killer application on narrowband networks. In the 00s, always-on, high-speed Internet access will be the initial killer application for broadband. The biggest existing problem with the Internet is lack of bandwidth, leading to low transmission speeds. What is needed is at least a ten-fold increase in speed. This report introduced the main platforms for high-speed Internet, including xDSL, cable modems, satellite and wireless.
