Synopsis
The incumbent France Telecom still dominates all sectors but increasing competition has steadily eroded its lead. This has forced it to restructure its operations to meet future customer needs and to concentrate on mobile data and IP-delivered content over new fibre-based networks. The mobile market is dominated by a triopoly of providers with relatively low MVNO competition, but the vibrant broadband market has seen strong growth in DSL and particularly well developed fibre deployment from three key providers. A large share holding in Neuf Cegetel, operating in all sectors and providing real competition to France Telecom, was bought by SFR in April 2008. This report describes the present activities of the major operators in France, both fixed-line and mobile, together with an analysis of company strategies for coming years.
