Europe - Telecommunications - Market Overview

Synopsis

This report introduces the European telecommunications market. The expanded European Union (EU) accounts for the lion’s share of the market, although growth in 2004/5 is also booming in the eastern European countries. Most countries are seeing the stabilisation of market growth for voice telephony, with overall market expansion driven by mobile telephony, broadband Internet access and to a lesser extent the continued impact of the Internet on citizens, governments and businesses. After a slow 2002-3, ICT market growth recovered in 2004 and expected to reach 4% in 2005.

"Paul, May I congratulate you on a very successful and enjoyable afternoon with the Minister. In providing the roundtable discussions between government and industry, it highlighted the strong interest by stakeholders in Broadband and its implementation but it also presented us with other issues and opportunities that we need to address."

Dominic Schipano, CITT
