Synopsis
Archived report: this report was archived on 19 October 2005 and has not been updated. Europe has served as a test-bed for wireless services. The 350 million Western European mobile telephony users are seen as one of the crucial markets in the world for the development of mobile non-voice services. Mobile phones penetration has reached more than 100% in some markets, and is nearing saturation in others. Europe also saw inordinately expensive 3G licence auctions and beauty contests, costing operators some €150 billion. As a result, a range of wireless data applications have been launched to attract customers and recoup investment. This report looks at the overall market for wireless data applications such as SMS, MMS, WAP, and GPRS up to 2004.
