Synopsis
Italy is one of the largest telecom markets in Europe and is home to the sixth largest telco in the world – Telecom Italia (TI). The Maltese population of 440,000 supports a tiny neighbouring market. Both incumbent operators dominate their respective markets. Malta has cable modem and xDSL broadband technologies, while Italy’s market is xDSL and FTTH oriented. Both countries have active mobile phone markets – 3G and i-mode have launched in Italy – and almost all subscribers are on prepaid accounts. Satellite TV companies Stream and Tele+ have merged and Italy has also revised its digital TV plan. This report covers each market.
