Synopsis

Germany is the largest telecom market in Europe, and Austria is heavily influenced in many ways, but has exceeded the giant in other areas. Competition remains an issue in both countries, though Germany was kick started into reform in 2002 by EC legal action. And while Deutsche Telekom’s problems with its debt reverberate across broadband and broadcasting sectors with cable network sales, Austria has embraced broadband with xDSL, cable, FTTH and wireless technologies. 3G operators are fidgeting in Germany, with Sonera and Telefonica getting out altogether, and France Telecom abandoned MobilCom. The other company collapse was also in Germany with the demise of the Kirch Group.
