Synopsis

France is the third largest market in Europe, but it has not embraced the Internet or mobile phones with the same enthusiasm as many of its neighbours. Switzerland has been more enthusiastic and has much higher penetration levels of broadband Internet and mobile phone subscribers. Both countries have cable and DSL services available, but Switzerland’s cable market is more developed and competitive than France’s. The lack of cable TV networks has also limited the Digital Terrestrial TV (DTT) market in France. However, both countries progressed their regulatory and commercial DTT markets in 2003.
