The European Commission (EC) has actively pushed wireless broadband and mobile data services in a bid to develop the European broadband market. The EC recommended that Member States (MS) facilitate the use of Radio Local Area Networks (RLANs), also known as Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) for accessing public services. Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) technology has been widely deployed in Europe since 2003, principally in Germany, the UK and the Netherlands. British Telecom, Telia, Swisscom and T-Mobile were the main incumbent players investing in the services.
