Synopsis
Archived report: this report was archived on 19 October 2005 and has not been updated. By the beginning of 2005 the number of broadband access lines in the expanded European Union (EU) was approaching 37 million, or 6.5% of the population (7.6% for the EU15, compared to 4.5% in 2003). This growth - 72% on 2004 and 236% since 2002 - is being driven largely by intensifying competitive pressure and by fixed operators offsetting their eroding voice telephony revenues. The new entrants’ share of the broadband market has risen to 43.7%, an increase of 2.2% on 2003. The leading broadband markets in 2004 were Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden. The main growth driver is xDSL, followed by cable and to a lesser extent satellite and wireless broadband.
