Colombia - Broadband & Broadcasting Market - Background Report

Synopsis

Broadband made its first appearance in Colombia in 1997, pioneered by the Andes University and by TV Cable. Until 2001, broadband access was only through cable modem, and it was only available in Bogotá and Bucaramanga. ADSL first appeared in 2001. As part of the government’s effort to reduce the ‘digital divide’ in Colombia, in 1999 the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology (Mintic) developed a program named Compartel, aimed at providing every Colombian with access to telephone and Internet services. This report provides background information for the more regularly updated Colombia - Broadband & Broadcasting Market - Overview, Statistics & Forecasts. As such, it does not cover statistics or forecasts, but contains historical details on the development of Colombia’s broadband and pay TV markets that are absent from the more up-to-date report.
