Analyst: Peter Evans

Synopsis

Canada has developed one of the most modern, sophisticated and widely available telecommunications infrastructures in the world. This reflects the country’s unique geographic, demographic and political character, as well as its physical closeness to the USA and Europe. Proximity to the USA in particular has fostered cross-border competition and mutual influence on each others’ industry developments. During the last twenty years the federal government has strenuously encouraged competition, service availability that is uniform, affordable and modern throughout the country, and extensive research, development and investment in infrastructure to achieve an integrated national broadband platform.
