Synopsis
Brazil is home to almost one third of all mobile subscribers in Latin America. The country’s mobile penetration is about average for the region, but varies considerably from state to state – from 156% in the Federal District, to 43% in the northeastern state of Maranhão. Number portability became available nationwide in March 2009, helping to increase competition in an already highly competitive market. Some 10% of Brazil’s municipalities still lack mobile coverage, down from 34% in early 2008. Telefónica is conducting field tests in Brazil on Long Term Evolution (LTE), also known as 4G mobile. The success of 3G augurs well for LTE in this country. Accompanied by key market statistics and analyses, this report provides an overview of the mobile voice and data market. It also contains scenario forecasts for the years 2015 and 2020.
