Synopsis

BellSouth International was a wholly-owned subsidiary of US-based BellSouth Corporation. It was a leading pan-regional provider of cellular services in Latin America, where it operated cellular networks in 11 countries. The networks were all digital, using TDMA, GSM or CDMA technology. It also has an investment in Israel’s Cellcom. During the early 2000s it had severe financial difficulties in Latin America, reflecting weak economic conditions and currency devaluations principally in Argentina and Venezuela. In 2003, these operations returned to breakeven but, in 2004, agreement was reached to sell its Latin American operations to Telefonica. These transactions were concluded in 2004 and late 2005. The remaining Israeli investment was transferred to BellSouth.
